Bar chart race of G20 member’s current health expenditure (% of GDP) Top20 from 2000 to 2021

Level of current health expenditure expressed as a percentage of GDP. Estimates of current health expenditures include healthcare goods and services consumed during each year. This indicator does not include capital health expenditures such as buildings, machinery, IT and stocks of vaccines for emergency or outbreaks.

Reasons behind trends:

  • High healthcare expenditure in G20 countries like the US, Germany, and France is driven by advanced medical technologies, comprehensive systems, and aging populations, leading to significant healthcare spending and administrative costs.
  • Moderate expenditure in G20 countries like Canada, the UK, and Italy is due to universal coverage, healthcare reforms, and aging populations, resulting in steady increases in healthcare spending to maintain quality and access.
  • Low to moderate expenditure in G20 countries like India, Indonesia, and Mexico is driven by economic constraints, large populations, and ongoing efforts to improve healthcare access and infrastructure, leading to gradual increases in spending.
